건기식 주요 고객층은 50~60대 중장년이다. 한국건강기능식품협회 조사에 따르면 5060의 구입 금액 점유율은 35%로 1위였다. 본인뿐 아니라 배우자나 자녀의 제품도 함께 구매하며, 한번 선택한 성분과 브랜드에 대한 충성도가 높다는 점이 특징이다. 다음으로 10대 이하 자녀를 둔 30~40대 워킹맘도 28% 점유율을 차지하는 주요 소비층으로 꼽힌다.
◇콩팥 기능 저하자·장 민감자, 마그네슘 영양제 피해야
셀프메디케이션 시장은 건기식의 성장을 이끌고 있다. 식약처는 규제샌드박스에 이어 맞춤형 건기식 소분·판매의 제도화 방안을 찾고 있으며, 관련 법률 개정을 추진하고 있다. 법안에는 ‘맞춤형 건강기능식품 판매업’ 신설 및 ‘맞춤형 건강기능식품관리사’ 등을 도입하는 내용이 담겨 있다. 오유경 식약처장은 “소비자 안전 확보를 위해 제도적으로 보완해야 할 부분이 있는지 시범사업 전 과정을 꼼꼼히 살피겠다”며 “맞춤형 건기식이 소비자의 건기식 섭취·구매 편의성을 높이고 건기식 산업의 새로운 성장 동력이 되도록 법령 정비 등 필요한 지원을 아끼지 않을 것”이라고 밝혔다.
다만 유산균, 비타민D, 오메가3 등은 공복에 먹어야 좋다고 해서 아침식사 전에 드시는 분들이 많은데 효과가 떨어질 수 있는데요. 통상적으로 기상 직후와 취침 전은 우리 몸의 위산 농도가 가장 높을 때입니다. 유산균도 ‘균’이기 때문에 위산 농도가 높으면 쉽게 죽어 효과를 보지 못할 수 있습니다.

◇마그네슘 필요한 골다공증·불면증·두통·심한 PMS
동성제약은 10일 건강기능식품 DS바이오 ‘이지드롭’과 ‘츄어블 비타민D 400IU’를 출시했다고 밝혔다.
또 혈액순환에 도움을 줄 수 있는 비타민E, 항산화 물질인 감마오리자놀도 함유했다.
제품은 바실러스 낫토 추출물(비타민 K2)도 함유했다. 씹어서 섭취 가능한 츄어블 연질 캡슐 형태로 어린아이도 부담 없이 하루 1캡슐을 섭취해 비타민D 1일 권장 섭취량을 채울 수 있다.
개인 맞춤형 영양제 분석과 구독 서비스를 넘어 커피머신으로 홈 카페를 만드는 것처럼, 집에서 영양제를 만들어먹는 것도 가능해질 것으로 보인다. 영양제 기계로 매일매일 다른 컨디션에 맞춘 영양제를 조합하는 것.

엠지멕스 플러스비는 기존의 엠지멕스(산화 마그네슘 250mg)와 비교해 산화 마그네슘 함량을 400mg으로 증량하고, 활성형 비타민 B1(벤포티아민) 60mg 및 신경비타민 시아노코발라민 500μg까지 보강했다고 회사측은 설명했다.

엠에스엠 등 건강 개선에 도움 되는 성분은 어떨까? 이 성분들은 대개 영양제로 먹으면 사람이 가진 생리적 회복 능력을 강화해 건강회복을 돕는다. 적정 시점에 잘 먹으면 건강 유지에 도움을 줄 수 있지만 나쁜 식습관이나 생활 습관이 계속된다면 영양제도 한계를 드러낸다. 이럴 때 사람들이 찾는 게 바로 좋은 음식이다.

영양제는 비타민&미네랄 등의 영양소와 건강 개선에 도움을 주는 다양한 물질로 나뉜다. 영양소는 일반 식사에서 얻지만, 후자에 속하는 루테인, 오메가-3, 프로바이오틱스, 엠에스엠(MSM) 등은 일반 식사에서 충분히 얻지 못하거나 얻기 어렵다.
유산균은 공복에 먹어야 좋다는데, 영양제 섭취 순서나 시간에 따라 효과가 달라지나요?

변화 과정은 힘들지만, 장기적 건강 상태 유지에 가장 중요한 ‘좋은 음식’
장동석 약사: 비타민K의 경우 심장질환, 뇌질환 등 혈관 관련 질환이 있는 분은 주의해 복용해야 합니다. 비타민K는 혈액을 응고시키는 성질이 있는데 많은 양을 섭취할 경우 혈액 응고 시간이 짧아져 주의가 필요합니다.
박경아 여약사이사는 “어려운 때일수록 지역사회와 함께하는 약사들이 있어 든든하다. 항산화 성분과 마그네슘군이 포함돼 혈행개선과 운동성향상, 편두통예방 효과가 있는 만큼 넉넉한 물과 함께 복용하면 된다. 다만, 항응고제(와파린) 복용자는 섭취하지 않도록 해달라”고 당부했다
피부 유산균, 여성 유산균… 종류에 따라 효과가 다른가요?

영양제는 잘 활용하면 건강 관리에 꽤 효과적이다. 비타민&미네랄 등 영양소는 다이어트나 편식 등으로 절대적 영양소 섭취가 부족하거나 스트레스, 피로, 병후 회복 등으로 영양소 소모량이 증가할 때 활용하면 좋다. 예를 들어 구내염이 재발하는 사람이 비타민B2, B6 함유 영양제를 먹으면 구내염 발병 횟수가 줄어든다. 운동량 또는 걸어 다니는 업무량 증가로 근육 경련이나 뭉침이 심할 때 마그네슘을 먹으면 증상이 나아지기도 한다. 모든 상황은 특정 영양소 결핍이 원인일 때만 효과가 있다. 반대로 말하면 영양소를 먹었을 때 불편 증상이 나아지지 않으면 평소 생활을 다시 점검해야 한다는 뜻이다.

김선영 교수: 비타민A를 복용할 때 주의가 필요해요. 두통, 피곤, 식욕저하, 어지럼증, 피부 건조, 간 손상, 출혈 등을 일으킬 수 있기 때문입니다. 임산부에겐 금기이고, 알코올 중독자라면 간 손상을 키울 수 있습니다.
